Philosophy of Care
My practice has an emphasis on self-care. Healing is a process wherein the person seeking help is an active participant in their own journey toward healing. Self-care and healing can include caring for pets, creative activities, being in nature, cooking, movement, meditation, enjoying popular culture, and ultimately, self-compassion.
Self-compassion facilitates compassion for others which can in turn help heal relationships and greatly enhance our relationship to others and the environment. Relationships thrive best when we take responsibility for our part of an argument or what we bring from our pasts into the present. The more we understand ourselves, the more we accept responsibility for our own flaws, rather than blaming or projecting our perceived weaknesses onto others.
Letting go of things we have no control of and allowing things to be as they are is also a difficult practice but one that can lead to a tremendous reward--healing.
Medication, when necessary, is just an adjunct to therapy and other self-care practices. In my practice, finding the right regimen is a joint collaboration between doctor and patient. When appropriate, I use DNA testing to add information toward this collaboration. Sometimes finding the right regimen can take time. It is always combined with other elements of therapy. Whether or not medication is a component of your healing, others in your life sometimes may notice discernible changes before you do. If these changes are subtle at first, they invariably lead to an exponential shift over time. Always they are my pleasure and privilege to witness.
